ChatPanel is local-first. It is designed so your data stays on your machine. We, the developers, do not operate a server that receives your conversations or page content on the Free or Pro plans.
What ChatPanel stores
- Locally, in your browser (
chrome.storage): your chat history, the agents and skills you configure, your API keys, and your preferences. This never leaves your device except as described below.
What gets sent, and where
- To the model endpoint you configure — when you send a message, its text plus any context you attach (current tab, selected tabs, or a pasted URL's content) is sent to the provider you chose: your local Ollama/LM Studio, your OpenAI/OpenRouter/Anthropic endpoint, or your local ChatPanel Bridge. We do not see or proxy this traffic.
- To the license server — if you activate Pro/Team, your license key is sent to our verification endpoint (a Cloudflare Worker) to confirm it is valid. No chat content is sent.
Permissions
tabs/scripting/ host access — to read the page content you ask ChatPanel about and to fetch URLs you paste. Reading happens only when you send a message or attach context, never in the background.storage— to save your chats and settings locally.
The Team plan (cloud features)
If you opt into Team features such as cloud sync, the specific data those features require (e.g. chats you choose to sync) is stored on our infrastructure to provide them. These are opt-in and clearly labeled.
This website (chatpanel.net)
The marketing website uses Google Analytics (gtag.js) to understand aggregate traffic — pages visited, referrer, approximate region. This applies to the website only; it is separate from the extension, which remains local-first and is not analytics-instrumented. You can block it with any tracker blocker, and we honor browser Do-Not-Track where supported.
